About the club

Stevenage rowing club does not currently exist. Please get in contact to register your interest.

We are aiming to found a rowing club based on the main lake within Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage.

To get the club started, we need a small core of people to help with admin and initial roles within the club. If you are an experienced rower, then even better. Please get in touch if you can help.

If you are a complete beginner, and are interested in learning to row, please get in contact. We will put you on our waiting list for our next learn-to-row course. We aim to hold several of these over the spring/summer months.

Advantages of the location

  • situated in a popular and pleasant park

  • very wide, at over 120m, allowing for side-by-side rowing

  • largely surrounded by trees, often leading to very calm water, and limiting the impact of any strong winds

  • has cycle paths around virtually the entire lake, allowing for easy coaching

  • easy to get out of the lake at almost all points, in case of capsize

  • existing basic changing facilities

  • existing landing-stage

  • a cafe for post-training coffee and ice-cream

  • suitable area for boat storage, albiet outside

Disadvantages of the location

One major disadvantage is that the lake is only 400m long, which doesn't give you very long before you must turn the boat. However, the lake is wide enough that you could turn while moving, at least at one end.

With the best will in the world, this will always be a limitation. As such, the club will be for small boats only (1x, 2x, 2-).
